About Local Environmental Solutions

Local Environmental Solutions was established in 2004 by Jim Shields and Elisabeth Larsen.

Jim Shields holds a PhD in wildlife management and brings more than 30 years of experience to the ecological consulting profession. His main job for the past 15 years has been to design ways to successfully manage fauna and flora for Forests New South Wales, a government trading enterprise which manages 5 million acres of native and planted forests.

Jim also has a background in academic research and maintains a teaching position in wildlife management at Macquarie University. He is interested in the use of dogs for conservation work and has successfully trained Australia’s first koala detection dog. Jim is a board member of the Australian Ecosystem Foundation Inc.

Elisabeth Larsen has a degree in Environmental Management and has over 10 years experience as an independent environmental consultant. Her main responsibility is Herds for Hire (Bega Valley Goat Rental), a business that uses goats for safe and effective control of weeds, fire hazards and unwanted vegetation.

Our team has worked in all environments across NSW and investigated matters relevant to all major groups of wildlife. We have experience from environmental management elsewhere in Australia and overseas (North America, Western Europe, Japan).

We subscribe to the Code of Business Practice, Professional Conduct and Ethics endorsed by the Ecological Consultants Association of NSW.
